3M Scotch® 22 – Heavy Duty Vinyl Electrical Tape
Scotch® Heavy Duty Vinyl Electrical Tape 22 is a premium-grade, 0.25 mm thick vinyl insulating tape designed for continuous performance in ambient temperatures up to 80°C. It remains conformable for cold-weather applications down to -10°C and offers excellent resistance to abrasion, moisture, alkalis, acids, corrosion, and varying weather conditions. The elastic PVC backing combined with an aggressive rubber-based adhesive provides moisture-tight electrical and mechanical protection with minimal bulk. The tape is UL Listed, CSA Certified, and VDE approved for IEC 60454-3-1-2/F-PVC P/60.
Key Features
• Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) backing
• Pressure-sensitive rubber-based adhesive
• Compatible with solid dielectric cable insulations
• Inhibits corrosion of electrical conductors
• Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications
• Enhanced mechanical strength and flexibility
• Provides extra protection against abrasion
• Cold and flame-resistant (per UL 510)
Applications
• Primary electrical insulation for all wire and cable splices rated up to 600V and 80°C
• Primary insulation for 600V bus applications and protective jacketing for low- and highvoltage bus connections
• Protective jacketing for high-voltage cable splices and repairs
• Harnessing and bundling of wires and cables
User Information
Scotch® Heavy Duty Vinyl Electrical Tape 22 uses a PVC backing with a rubber-based,
pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is UL Listed and flame-retardant, maintaining physical
stability between -10°C and 38°C for both indoor and outdoor applications. The tape
remains stable without telescoping more than 2.54 mm at temperatures below 50°C.
Shelf Life and Storage
Scotch® Tape 22 has a 5-year shelf life from the date of manufacture when stored in a
controlled environment (10°C to 27°C, <75% relative humidity).
Engineering and Installation Guidance
For primary insulation of 600V wire rated 80°C and below, apply a minimum of two halflapped layers of Scotch® 22 tape. For connectors with irregular surfaces, use 3M™
Scotchfil™ Electrical Insulation Putty or Scotch® Linerless Rubber Splicing Tape 130°C
before applying Scotch® 22. When used as outer jacketing, overwrap rubber or
thermoplastic splices with at least two half-lapped layers of Scotch® 22.
Apply the tape with firm tension (reducing width to ~5/8 of its original) in half-lapped
layers, wrapping from smaller to larger diameters. End wraps should be applied with
minimal tension to prevent flagging.
